Lip fillers are dermal fillers specifically designed for use in the lips. While other dermal fillers for different parts of the face may need more thickness and firmness, lip fillers must remain flexible, soft, and provide volume without hindering the natural motion of the lips. The most popular lip fillers contain a molecule called hyaluronic acid. This molecule occurs naturally in the skin and attracts moisture. This provides rapid results as the hyaluronic acid pulls in moisture to both hydrate and volumize the area.
Lip fillers continue to increase in popularity as formulas designed just for lips come onto the market. These newer formulas avoid lips that look too firm or lack their natural softness. Lips look natural but more defined and with soft, flexible fullness. The new formulas from Juvederm® and Restylane® are still made of hyaluronic acid but in new and more refined forms. When injected into the skin, the hyaluronic acid molecules provide immediate plumping. They also begin attracting moisture, which will continue to plump and enhance the area. Three popular brands of hyaluronic acid fillers, Juvederm®, Restylane®, and RHA Collection offer one or more formulas designed specifically for the lips. These fillers have similar but not identical properties, and your FACE Skincare~Medical~Wellness team will guide you through which lip filler will give you the best results.
This lip filler uses a specially formulated filler technology by Allergan called VYCROSS®. This formula gives it extra lasting power while maintaining its smooth lip-enhancing properties. The texture of Juvederm® tends to be slightly different from Restylane®.
This filler not only enhances your lips but also addresses nasolabial folds and marionette lines, the fine lines around your mouth that can make you look and feel older than you are. It provides the flexibility needed for use in the lips while still being able to lift lines and wrinkles around the mouth.
Approved for use in the lips and for the fine lines around the mouth, this filler provides softer, fuller lips that still look natural and have all their natural range of motion. This filler was the first FDA-approved for use specifically in the lips.
This lip-enhancing formula contains a proprietary arrangement of hyaluronic acid molecules for an especially smooth, soft pout with plenty of subtle but noticeable volume. People love the results, which look natural but also beautifully enhanced.

Your Nurse Injector will inject the lip filler into your lips. The number of injections depends on the filler and the desired results. Treatment usually takes 10-20 minutes. You may feel a small pinch from the injection. Some dermal fillers contain lidocaine, which helps to numb the area and make each injection feel less noticeable. If your filler contains lidocaine, you will notice numbness in the injection area as it starts to work. After the injections, you can get up and go right back to your normal day.
You can resume your regular activities after treatment with no restrictions. You may notice some minor redness in the injection area, but this will fade within a few hours. Some people may notice bruising that will last less than a week. Mild swelling and redness can also occur in some people but will go away within a few days.
Some people notice that speaking feels slightly different for a day or two because of the increased lip volume. Rest assured that you will get used to this very quickly and that most people have no problem speaking normally right after lip filler.
You will see lips that look immediately softer, plumper, and fuller. These results will improve over the next one to two weeks as the hyaluronic acid continues to draw in moisture and enhance lip volume and contour, while swelling and bruising minimizes. Once these results have finished developing, you can expect them to last six to eighteen months. Hyaluronic acid molecules, which the body recognizes as natural, last in the lips until the body removes them as part of its normal turnover process.
The newest generation of lip fillers gives you natural-looking results, so you will see lips that look like your own but with more volume and definition. Many of these fillers also work well for the fine lines around the mouth. The combination of flexibility and smoothness that characterizes lip fillers also works well in this delicate area since flexibility around the mouth lets us form many facial expressions.
Each lip filler lasts a slightly different length of time. In general, lip fillers do not last as long as thicker, more durable fillers that are applied to other areas of the face. This occurs because of their thinner, more malleable formula and because the lips move so frequently. This regular motion causes the hyaluronic acid structure to break down more quickly and results in faster removal by the body. Dermal fillers to fill in lines and wrinkles may not experience the same amount of motion and can last closer to 18 months in some cases.
Lip fillers from Restylane® typically last about six to 12 months, while Juvederm® lip fillers last eight months to a year. Very mobile areas like the lips present a challenge for dermal fillers since the constant motion causes the body to clear away the hyaluronic acid molecules more quickly. Newer lip formulas accommodate this to give the longest-lasting results available.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that the average cost of a dermal filler treatment session is $684. Keep in mind that this average will change depending on your area, your provider and their experience level, and other factors.
