Most people have heard of Botox®, but this familiar name is only one brand of a family of injectables called neurotoxins or neuromodulators. They all use botulinum toxin to relax facial muscles, smoothing away the appearance of expression lines and wrinkles.
Daxxify™ is the newest and most revolutionary member of this family. It promises to change the relationship many people have with their anti-aging treatments. While other botulinum toxin products usually last three to four months, Daxxify™ can last six months or longer, letting you spend less time getting injections and more time enjoying your results.
Daxxify™ works by acting on the nerves that send signals to your facial muscles. Muscles in areas like the forehead fold and crease with your facial expressions, leading to wrinkles. Relaxing the muscles allows the skin to relax as well, giving you a smoother, more youthful appearance.
Daxxify™ temporarily binds to the facial nerves and stops them from releasing a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Without this signal, your facial muscles do not contract. Daxxify™ is administered in tiny, targeted doses that only affect the desired muscles. You will retain your natural-looking facial expressions. While the body will remove most neuromodulators within three to four months, it takes six months or more to remove Daxxify™. The nerves will resume their usual function after Daxxify™ wears off, so many people schedule maintenance appointments to keep their anti-aging results.
Your Daxxify™ treatment usually takes less than 30 minutes. You will receive several injections with a tiny needle that administers Daxxify™. You may feel a slight pinch with each injection. You can leave immediately after your appointment and return to work or your usual activities. Daxxify™, like its relatives, can be used to treat lines between the brows (glabellar lines), forehead lines, crow’s feet, and other areas. Your appointment may take a bit longer if you have multiple areas treated, but many people can fit a session into a lunch break.
Like other neuromodulators, the results of Daxxify™ take time to appear. People usually see results from these treatments start to appear within three to seven days. A unique benefit of Daxxify™ is how long its results last. Most people will need neuromodulator touch-ups every three to four months, with some people reaching five. Daxxify™ gives you results that last at least six months. Research showed that some people still had visible anti-wrinkle effects at nine months.
Daxxify™ does not require any downtime. You should avoid rubbing your face for several hours after your injections and follow any other instructions provided. Some people experience minor swelling, bruising, or sensitivity in the treatment area for a day or two. Headaches may happen but usually fade within a few hours.
Most healthy adults make good candidates for Daxxify™. Your injection specialist will determine whether Daxxify™ is the best choice for your treatment. It is currently FDA-approved for glabellar lines. Like other neuromodulators, it is also safe for use in a variety of other locations. You may not be a good candidate if you are pregnant or have certain neuromuscular conditions.
