What are Dysport^® injections?

Dysport^® is an FDA-Approved prescription injection to treat moderate to severe frown lines (those wrinkles between the eyebrows). Medically, it’s a botulinum neurotoxin (abobotulinumtoxinA), an acetylcholine release inhibitor and a neuromuscular blocking agent. It temporarily prevents specific muscle movements that cause frown lines.

Dysport^® is supplied as a single-use, sterile 300-unit vial. The dose of Dysport^® for the treatment of glabellar lines (frown lines between your eyebrows) is a total of 50 units injected equally among the specific muscles.

How is Dysport^® different from BOTOX^® Cosmetic?

Dysport^® and BOTOX^® Cosmetic are both made from botulinum toxin type A. However, there are some differences: A unit of Dysport^® is not equivalent a unit of BOTOX^® Cosmetic so you can’t expect to use the same number of Dysport^® units that you are used to using in BOTOX^® Cosmetic units. The ratio of Dysport^® to BOTOX^® Cosmetic units is generally 2.5-3: 1 (2.5-3 times more Dysport^® units per BOTOX^® unit). There is some variation between the upper and lower face. Dysport^® diffuses a bit farther than BOTOX^® Cosmetic from the injection point: one to three centimeters compared to BOTOX^® Cosmetic’s one centimeter. This means that fewer injections are typically needed. Dysport^® could act faster than BOTOX^® Cosmetic. It typically takes 3-7 days with BOTOX^® Cosmetic versus Dysport^® acts in 1-2 days to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and lines. Dysport^® contains less protein than BOTOX^® Cosmetic which means the body should break it down more slowly. The studies are mixed, however, about whether Dysport^® lasts longer than BOTOX^® Cosmetic.

What is a Typical Treatment Like?

The administration of Dysport^® usually takes only about 5 minutes and is minimally invasive. Most people are surprised that the discomfort is so minimal, however, we can use ice prior as an effective topical anesthetic and minimize bruising by constricting the capillaries, for those prone to bruising.

What Results Will I See?*

Though results vary, there is typically a noticeable improvement in moderate to severe frown lines between the brows within 2-3 days, with a full culmination within a week. One treatment of Dysport^® can last for up to 4 months, just like BOTOX^® Cosmetic or Xeomin^®. You can get your next treatment as soon as you notice the wrinkles reappearing as the muscle function returns.

Is There Any Downtime?*

You can return to most normal activities immediately after the injections, however, it is advised to avoid exercise for 24 hours post-treatment, and not lay down for 4 hours post-treatment.

The possible side effects of Dysport^® are similar to those of BOTOX^® Cosmetic, such as headache, drooping eyelids or eyebrows. After the treatment, there will be some reddening and swelling in the treated area which usually resolve within a half-hour or less. As with any injections, there is always the possibility of bruising. To minimize the risk of bruising, it is best not to take aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oils or large doses of Vitamin E (greater than 100 IU/day) for two weeks before the treatment. However, this is a precaution only. Other possible side effects include nose and throat irritation, injection site skin reaction, upper respiratory tract infection, eyelid swelling, sinus inflammation, and nausea.
